The Babel Project

Beschreibung

The Babel Project, inspired by artworks, memorials and Labyrinthine libraries, takes biblical Tower of Babel as catalyst, as an archetype for architectural folly through to its contemporary outcomes in the fiscal and administrative power-structures of business and industry, and to its manifestations in memorials and places of worship. The cataloguing humanity is a central motif, an attempt to overcome memory-failure through methods of multiplication and repetition. Babel is a monument to the collapse of language and an ode to ambitious architectures, mass human movement and communication failure. It offers up the origins of diaspora, now a global condition in the contemporary world. Diasporas remain un-mapped territories which overlap and intersect in many ways. Diaspora as homeland is the new condition: a traumatic situation of lack, where communities fight over territory, persecution arises and people are forced into flight.
