From a background in dance and design, a particular interest the atmospherics of space has led to an architectural approach to the reinterpretation of sites as dynamic sculptural events. Alan's range of practice extends from ensemble performance to dance, video, sculptural installation and performance art. The body is used as primary means and reference point in works which explore fundamental issues of human interaction and endeavour, notions of presence, and relationships between body, space and matter. The founding member (in 1992) and Artistic Director of Gravity Feed he has performed in all the company's works and was concept designer of the sets for In the House of Skin, The Gravity of the Situation, and Tabernacle. He formed a second organisation GRI (Gravity Feed Institute) in 2000. Its first project was the Creative Development of SCHAM, in collaboration with and based on the designs of Berlin artist Volker März, with inventor-technician Joey Ruigrok and local performers. Alan has collaborated with sound artist Rik Rue on many projects, including two video dance works, a residency and performance in Nuremberg (Kunstwerk 1998), and the Trace Elements Project (Trace Elements /Residual Effects 1996) in Outback NSW. That year he also undertook a residency in the UNSW studio at the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris. A significant influence on his work was the period 1989-91 when he lived & worked in Japan as a member of Min Tanaka's Maijuku Butoh Dance Company and Bodyweather Farm. From 1984-89 his principal expression was in solo dance improvisations, often performing with musician Ryszard Ratajczak.
