WANDLUNGSMASCHINE – Installation & Performance

WANDLUNGSMASCHINE is the final part of the long-stand project performing archive*, in which artist duo WILHELM GROENER – Günther Wilhelm & Mariola Groener – explore the possible links and frictions between the opposing concepts of the archival and the performative.
WANDLUNGSMASCHINE is a processual, performative installation. Over the course of an entire week, it develops and accumulates material from the WILHELM GROENER work cosmos of the last 22 years.
The project space of the Kunstquartier Bethanien will be transformed into a labyrinthine spatial structure by a multitude of large-format, interconnected frames. Its mobile structure creates ever new spatial constellations in which the audience can move freely. During the performance week, this structure is constantly fed with WILHELM GROENER’s artistic means and methods of dance, text, sound, visuals and objects, thus allowing for constantly changing relationships, transformations and twists. The performers involved have an (archival) movement vocabulary that is constantly expressed in a different way. Performance and material condensations are continually achieved, raising questions about the interactions of the permanent and the processual, the emerging and the decaying, the past and the future, the old and the new. A kind of machinery that appears in constant transformation and yet seeks to rest.
The performance week will be opened on Monday by the WILHELM GROENER nucleus – Mariola Groener and Günther Wilhelm. Franz Anton Cramer will accompany the processual development throughout the week as a writing presence. The nucleus then expands successively during the week, including Sunday, to eight participating performers.
Each evening has its own motto and is unique!

WILHELM GROENER and the project *performing archive
Since 2001 we – artist Mariola Groener and dancer Günther Wilhelm – have been working under the label WILHELM GROENER at the intersection of visual and performing arts. For us, our alter ego is a kind of third space in which our multi-layered work emerges in constant expansion, friction and transformation. Space, body, sound, visual means and material combine to create choreographic-performative textures. Experimental, abstract, poetic as well as receptive changes of perspective are part of our artistic strategies. So far, we have created more than 25 full-length pieces, numerous stations of our performance series “33 SKIZZEN”, a multitude of installations, video works, editions and publications. Naturally, the constant growth of the artistic oeuvre also raises questions about its archiving.
The idea arose over a longer period of time to focus on the body of work created so far as an initiator, guide, tool and tansformation machine. Not intended as a pure self-reflection and review, but as a potential method and possibility to overcome the temporality of the ephemeral arts and to transfer it into a broader, adaptive, playful and more present variety of formats. In turn, numerous new formats have emerged from the performing archive project over the past four years: Besides the reworking of our WILHELM GROENER web archive, the choreographic piece “#performingarchive2” (2020), the live online performance “33 SKIZZEN_performing@archive” at the ITI/Mediathek Berlin within the CoFestival Ljubljana (2020), the live online performance “33 SKIZZEN_performing@archive” at the invitation of the Goethe-Institut Jakarta as part of “art spaces and collaborative projects” (2020), the 8-part film experiment FRAMES FRAGMENTS FREQUENCIES (2022) as well as its further development as a choreographic-performative installation in Studio 1 of the Kunstquartier Bethanien (2022). Furthermore, our first NFT collection, which can be seen in the video space of WANDLUNGSMASCHINE, as well as “33 SKIZZEN_Archivpanoptikum” at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Ljubljana in May 2023.

WANDLUNGSMASCHINE ist der abschließende Teil des mehrjährigen Projekts performing archive*, in dem sich das Künstler- Duo WILHELM GROENER – Günther Wilhelm & Mariola Groener – mit den möglichen Verknüpfungen und Reibungen zwischen den entgegengesetzten Begriffen des Archivarischen und Performativen beschäftigt.
WANDLUNGSMASCHINE ist eine prozessuale, performative Installation. Über eine ganze Woche entwickelt und wandelt sich diese immer weiter und akkumuliert Material aus dem WILHELM GROENER-Werkkosmos der letzten 22 Jahre.
Der Projektraum des Kunstquartier Bethanien wird u.a. durch eine Vielzahl von großformatigen, miteinander verbundenen Rahmen in ein labyrinthisches Raumgefüge verwandelt. Durch dessen mobile Struktur entstehen immer neue Raumkonstellationen, in denen sich das Publikum frei bewegen kann. Diese Struktur wird während der Performance-Woche beständig mit WILHELM GROENER ́s künstlerischen Mitteln und Methoden aus Tanz, Text, Sound, Visuals und Objekten gefüttert und lässt dadurch stetig sich ändernde Beziehungen, Wandlungen und Wendungen zu. Die beteiligten Performer verfügen über ein (Archiv)Bewegungsvokabular, das immerzu anders zum Ausdruck kommt, same same but different. Fortwährend werden performative und materialtechnische Verdichtungen erreicht, die Fragen zu den Wechselwirkungen von Beständigem und Prozessualem, dem Entstehenden und dem Zerfallenden, dem Vergangenen und dem Zukünftigen, dem Alten und dem Neuen aufwerfen. Eine Art Maschinerie, die in ständiger Wandlung erscheint und doch nach Rast sucht.
Die Performance-Woche wird am Montag durch den WILHELM GROENER-Nucleus – Mariola Groener und Günther Wilhelm – eröffnet. Franz Anton Cramer wird die ganze Woche über als schreibende Präsenz die prozessuale Entwicklung begleiten. Der Nucleus erweitert sich dann sukzessive während der Woche einschließlich Sonntag auf acht beteiligte Performer.
Jeder Abend hat ein eigenes Motto und ist einzigartig!

WILHELM GROENER und das Projekt *performing archive
Seit 2001 arbeiten wir – Künstlerin Mariola Groener und Tänzer Günther Wilhelm – unter dem Label WILHELM GROENER an der Schnittstelle bildender und darstellender Kunst. Unser Alter ego ist für uns eine Art dritter Raum, in dem in steter Erweiterung, Reibung und Wandlung unser vielschichtiges Werk entsteht. Raum, Körper, Ton, visuelle Mittel und Material verbinden sich darin zu choreografisch-performativen Texturen. Experimentelles, Abstraktes, Poetisches als auch rezeptive Perspektivwechsel sind Teil unserer künstlerischen Strategien. So sind bisher über 25 abendfüllende Stücke, zahlreiche Stationen unserer Performance-Reihe »33 SKIZZEN«, eine Vielzahl an Installationen, Videoarbeiten, Editionen und Publikationen entstanden. Naturgemäß ergeben sich mit dem stetigen Anwachsen des künstlerischen Oeuvres auch Fragen zu dessen Archivierung.
Die Idee entstand über einen längeren Zeitraum den bisher geschaffenen Werkkörper selbst als Initiator, Leitfaden, Werkzeug und Wandlungsmaschine in den Mittelpunkt zu stellen. Nicht als reine Selbstbespiegelung und Revue passieren lassen` gedacht, sondern als potentielle Methode und Möglichkeit, die Zeitlichkeit der ephemeren Künste zu überwinden und in eine weiter gefasste, adaptive, spielerische und präsentere Formatvielfalt zu überführen.
Aus dem performing archive-Projekt wiederum sind in den vergangenen vier Jahren zahlreiche neue Formate entstanden: Neben der Neubearbeitung unseres WILHELM GROENER Web-Archives, das choreographische Stück „#performingarchive2“ (2020), die Live-Online-Performance „33 SKIZZEN_performing@archive“ im ITI/Mediathek Berlin innerhalb des CoFestival Ljubljana (2020), die Live-Online-Performance „33 SKIZZEN_performingarchive“ auf Einladung des Goethe-Instituts Jakarta im Rahmen von „art spaces and collaborative projects“ (2020), das 8-teilige Filmexperiment FRAMES FRAGMENTS FREQUENCIES (2022) sowie dessen Weiterentwicklung als choreografisch-performative Installation im Studio 1 des Kunstquartier Bethanien (2022). Weiterhin unsere erste NFT-Kollektion, die im Video-Raum von WANDLUNGSMASCHINE zu sehen ist, sowie im Mai 2023 „33 SKIZZEN_Archivpanoptikum” im Museum of Contemporary Art, Ljubljana.
