Do you remember Dorothy and her friends, the scarecrow, the tin man and the lion? The red shoes, the yellow brick road? Choreographer Joy Alpuerto Ritter brings the characters of the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz" back to life and shows us a modern, dance interpretation of this popular American children's fairy tale.

In OZ, the characters of the film meet in the form of different dance worlds, including hip-hop, breaking and contemporary dance. They are all united by the experience of self-doubt and pressure to conform. Together they escape their oppressive everyday lives and discover on their journey that they can change unjust power structures themselves.

OZ is an urban dance fairy tale about the art of saying no and about the question of how to find oneself in times of crisis.

TANZKOMPLIZEN is an initiative of TanzZeit e.V., funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Europe, with the kind support of Kulturprojekte Berlin.

Joy Alpuerto Ritter (choreography, dance) was born in the USA as a child of Filipino immigrants and grew up in Germany. She studied dance at the Palucca Hochschule in Dresden and received her diploma there in 2004. Since then she has worked as a freelance contemporary dancer with Christoph Winkler, Anja Kozik, Constanza Macras, Wangramirez and Heike Hennig, among others. She has also expanded her repertoire to include hip hop/new style, breakdancing and vogueing and has taken part in various dance battles. In 2011 she became a dancer with Cirque du Soleil and an aerialist in the Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour and performed for 2 years in various cities in Europe, the USA and Canada. Since 2013 she has been part of the Akram Khan Dance Company and the Wangramirez Company. In 2016, she was nominated as "Outstanding Dancer" (modern) in the performance "Until the Lions" by the National Dance Awards UK. With her own solo work "Babae" she received international resonance as a choreographer and was one of the Aerowaves artists 2020. Since then Joy has been creating her own work and collaborating as an (associate) choreographer with Akram Khan, Chen Shi-Zheng, Riz Ahmed, Viviana Durante, Florence + the Machine and supporting academic institutions in Austria, Germany, Italy and Beijing. Joy Alpuerto Ritter lives in Berlin.

Alba De Miguel Fuertes (dance) was born and raised in Logroño, Spain. After graduating as a physical education teacher from the University of La Rioja (2011), she moved to Madrid, where she graduated as a professional dancer in contemporary dance from the "Royal Conservatory of Dance Mariemma" in 2015. She continued her professional dance training at the SEAD "Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance" in Salzburg, Austria. In 2015 she joined the group "InPut". With them and choreographer Aila Etxegaray she performed and created different pieces, for example "De relaciones va la cosa" & "Kilometros". Alba has been living in Berlin since 2017. Here she first worked as a freelance artist with various freelance choreographers, musicians and visual artists* and at the end of 2017 as a full-time performer with cie. toula limnaios.

Joshua Nsubuga (Dance) is a Berlin-based dancer who has made a name for himself primarily in the hip hop and allstyle freestyle/battle scene. He has been dancing since 2011 and works tirelessly to perfect his craft in dance styles such as HipHop, Contemporary, Breakdance and Popping. Joshua has participated in numerous international dance exchanges (Paris, Berlin, Cuba and many more).

Liam Wustrack (Dance) studied stage dance at Etage Berlin and Pro Stage Berlin from 2014-2018. He also received dance lessons in various disciplines such as breakdance, hip hop and ballet. He gained his first stage experience between 2009 and 2012 with the Oxymoron Dance Company under the direction of Anja Kozik. From 2012 to 2013 he was a dancer in the opera production "Der Ring - Next Generation" at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (director: Robert Lehniger). This was followed in 2013 by the production "Closer" at T-Werk Potsdam, in 2014 by "Gilgamesh Must Die" at Deutsche Oper Berlin (director: Daniel Pfluger), in 2015 by "Romeo and Juliet" at the Bewegend anders Festival (director: Anja Kozik) and in 2017 by "Carmen" at Heckentheater Rheinsberg (director: Giorgio Madia). Liam Wustrack can be seen in the music video "What You Talking About" by Peter, Björn and John. In 2016 he participated in the youth exchange project HeARTISTs Worldwide Erasmus+ in Luxembourg. He can be seen regularly at various national and international breakdance battles.

Erinnert ihr euch an Dorothy und ihre Freunde, die Vogelscheuche, den Blechmann und den Löwen? An die roten Schuhe, an die „yellow brick road“? Die Choreografin Joy Alpuerto Ritter erweckt die Figuren des Films „The Wizard of Oz“ von 1939 wieder zum Leben und zeigt uns eine moderne, tänzerische Interpretation dieses beliebten amerikanischen Kindermärchens.

In OZ treffen die Charaktere des Films in Form von unterschiedlichen Tanzwelten aufeinander, unter anderem Hip-Hop, Breaking und zeitgenössischer Tanz. Sie alle eint die Erfahrung von Selbstzweifeln und Anpassungsdruck. Gemeinsam entfliehen sie ihrem bedrückenden Alltag und stellen auf ihrer Reise fest, dass sie ungerechte Machtstrukturen selbst verändern können.

OZ ist ein urbanes Tanzmärchen über die Kunst des Nein-Sagens und über die Frage, wie man in Zeiten der Krise zu sich selbst finden kann.

Im Jahr 2016 wurde sie als „herausragende Tänzerin“ (modern) in der Performance „Until the Lions“ von den National Dance Awards UK nominiert. Mit ihrer eigenen Soloarbeit „Babae“ hat sie als Choreografin internationale Resonanz erhalten und war eine der Aerowaves-Künstlerinnen 2020. Seitdem kreiert Joy ihre eigenen Arbeiten und arbeitet als (assoziierte) Choreografin mit Akram Khan, Chen Shi-Zheng, Riz Ahmed, Viviana Durante, Florence + the Machine zusammen und unterstützt akademische Institutionen in Österreich, Deutschland, Italien und Peking. Joshua Nsubuga (Tanz) ist ein in Berlin lebender Tänzer, der sich vor allem in der HipHop- und Allstyle-Freestyle/Battle-Szene einen Namen gemacht hat. Er tanzt seit 2011 und arbeitet unermüdlich an der Perfektionierung seines Handwerks in Tanzstilen wie HipHop, Contemporary, Breakdance und Popping. Joshua hat an zahlreichen internationalen Tanzaustauschprojekten (Paris, Berlin, Kuba und viele mehr) teilgenommen.


Liam Wustrack (Tanz) studierte von 2014-2018 Stage Dance an der Etage Berlin und bei Pro Stage Berlin. Darüber hinaus erhielt er Tanzunterricht in verschiedenen Disziplinen wie Breakdance, HipHop und Ballett. Erste Bühnenerfahrung sammelte er zwischen 2009 und 2012 bei der Oxymoron Dance Company unter der Leitung von Anja Kozik. Von 2012 bis 2013 war er in der Opernproduktion „Der Ring – Next Generation“ an der Deutschen Oper Berlin als Tänzer zu erleben (Regie: Robert Lehniger). Es folgten 2013 die Produktion „Closer“ am T-Werk Potsdam, 2014 „Gilgamesh Must Die“ an der Deutschen Oper Berlin (Regie: Daniel Pfluger), 2015 „Romeo und Julia“ beim Bewegend anders Festival (Regie: Anja Kozik) und 2017 „Carmen“ im Heckentheater Rheinsberg (Regie: Giorgio Madia). Liam Wustrack ist im Musikvideo „What You Talking About“ von Peter, Björn and John zu sehen. 2016 nahm er bei dem Jugendaustauschprojekt HeARTISTs Worldwide Erasmus+ in Luxemburg teil. Er ist regelmäßig bei verschiedenen nationalen und internationalen Breakdance Battles zu sehen.
