Kanadische Choreographin und Regisseurin. Marie - Josée Chartier, a Toronto-based Montrealer, is a dancer, choreographer, vocalist and teacher. She has been dancing professionally for 25 years and has performed throughout Canada, United States and Europe as a freelance artist and with dance companies including Pointépiénu, Louise Bédard Danse, Jean-Pierre Perreault and most notably Toronto's DANCEMAKERS. As a choreographer, Ms. Chartier has produced critically acclaimed works that have been presented by numerous producers and festivals such as the Canada Dance Festival, New Dance Horizons, Brian Webb Dance Company, Café Québec at Vooruit in Gent, Impuls Tanz in Vienna, la Ménagerie de Verre in Paris, the Substation in Singapore and P.S.122 in New York. She is fascinated by contemporary visual art and has created a cycle of works based on the human figure: seated woman, five seated figures, studies for the human body (for Dancemakers), study for a crouching figure and figures in stillness and in motion (installation work for 9 dancers and pianist). These last two works have received Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations. Her work has been the subject of a 30 minute documentary film In Stillness and in Motion which has been shown on national television (CBC, BRAVO! and Radio-Québec) and in the Montreal's Festival de Films sur l'Art. Ms. Chartier has received numerous choreographic commissions from solo artists and companies and created works such as Vestige for Toronto Dance Theatre, quicksilver for dancer Yvonne Ng, Variations on Figures for the AGO in Toronto and the Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina, étude pour deux mammifères/mammalian study for Kaeja d'Dance. As well, her own solo Vue sur l'Infini, for which she also created the music was performed largely in Canada. She has performed solo works including Mata Hari Terbenam by Peter Chin, Koron by Julia Aplin, Descent by Allen Kaeja and her own Sous Nos Yeux. Ms. Chartier has also designed several sets for her own work and has frequently collaborated with new music composers including her husband, the late Michael J. Baker, John Sherlock, Rodney Sharman, Allison Cameron, Rick Sacks and Linda C. Smith with whom she has created Exiles: A Book of Questions. a full evening work for 6 dancers. Her opera credits include choregraphy for Sirens and Echoes, two contemporary full evening works produced by Queen of Puddings Music Theatre. In April she premiered a full evening work for Dancemakers, fifty-one pieces of silver at the Premiere Dance Theatre in the Harbourfront Dance Season. (Quelle: vex.net)
