The devil will build a church where god builds a chapel. So Martin Luther spoke in his interpretation of the gospels more than 500 years ago. To find out about god’s reaction to things running the other way around, NOVOFLOT constructed a church in the immediate vicinity of the Volksbühne on the occasion of #1: The scream, their music-theatre production “The BIBLE” (in the translation of NOVOFLOT). Open (almost) daily 2 - 8 pm from 27 April until 1 May, NOVOFLOT invited all passers-by more or less deliberately influenced by the reformation to enter the half-sunken architecture for a moment and take a look at the gathered parish. Why it’s worthwhile? Because the six present members of the parish are not at all in a party mood. Quite the contrary: 500 years of Luther’s reformation evoked a state of emergency put into sound by composer Michael Wertmüller which repeatedly results in ecstatic screaming. The church building devil will disabuse those who expect destructive desperation. Because every scream erodes the chains of the Protestant practice of religion a little bit more. And raises hope for the return of gods, who will finally resemble human beings. And thereby creating room for a morally unstable and all the more forward-looking spirituality aside Luther’s interpretation of the bible.
