That what I feared the most has come upon me

The music theatre performance “Aquilo que mais” is a contemporary melodrama that is created in reaction to the rising power of religious fundamentalism in contemporary Brazil with parallels all over the world. The infiltration of the Evangelical church in local and federal government in Brazil resulted in a renewed attack on cultural and social institutions that promote among other things gender and sexuality freedom, freedom of speech and freedom of artistic expression. Above all the Evangelical church takes advantage of the weakest groups in the society and mobilizes them against secular freedom while taking 10% of their income with the promise of a sweet here-after. It is recurring process – conservative powers attract large numbers of voters from the same social groups that seem to gain the least from these attacks on education, multiculturalism, individual freedoms and family planning. Looking at this phenomenon we ask ourselves: what drives those who suffer the most from a conservative system to become its strongest advocates? How come he who suffers the most from religious tyranny remains his blind belief? We examine this question through the biblical story of Job – an exemplary believer that undergoes great tragedies but never losses his faith. While Job never challenges God’s will, his wife does. She, the unnamed who appears only once in the bible, is the main character through which we examine the question above.
