The Arab woman
In this 12’short film , an Arab man seduced by the spectrum of a Jewish singer fantasizes an erotic ritual of converting her into “his Arab woman.”
It also calls for a reflection on the identity of an Arab woman, her face, her sorrow and joy. Does her cry surpasses the niqab ? Is her voice listened ? Questions sometimes neglected in our occidental society.
As an aesthetics experience, it is left to the viewer to form his/her own perception.
It is sung in Arab by the soprano and spoken in Portuguese by the actor/ tenor ,with legend.
The music asks for traditional and ethnical instruments as well as electronic means inducing a meditative mood creating microtonal densities with the melismatic singing in Arab.
The Arab woman is an independent part of a full length 85’ fiction film Liquid Voices – the story of Mathilda Segalescu , being edited at present.
The Jewish /Arab question as well as the topic of refugees is also developed during the full length film.
Two scripts for this work were conceived : one for a multimedia opera performed in theatre (SESC SP Oct 2017) another as a cinematic opera filmed at the ruins of the Cassino da Urca, Rio de Janeiro, Oct 2017. Besides the inhospitable conditions of the ruins, our concept did not envisage public during the process of filming.
