Frankenstein

Beschreibung

In response to the US current national political climate, we use Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus as a launch pad from which to explore themes of outsider status and abandonment through Green T’s signature physical theater. This is accomplished in part by structuring the performance to mirror its content. Women play featured roles to highlight the novel’s issues with power inequity.

 The show is composed of three seemingly disconnected scenes cobbled together, much as Frankenstein’s creature is.  One scene makes a nod to the iconic 1931 film by bringing the creature to life in a black and white tableau.  Another scene features an eerie parade of grotesque beings carrying human limbs to assemble a 10-foot tall creature puppet.The third scene centers on the creature’s status as an outsider. An ambitious medical student struggles with her choice to bring a creature to life, then panics and shuns it.  Locked out of society, deprived of human contact, understanding and compassion, the creature tragically lashes out.

 Live taiko percussion and vocals plus an almost continuous wash of pre-recorded and electronic original music and soundscapes help stitch together and propel the story quilt and build emotional depth

 A centerpiece of the performance is a choral settin g of a poem by Mary Shelley’s husband Percy: “… For, be it joy or sorrow,
 The path of its departure still is free:
 Man's yesterday may ne'er be like his morrow;
 Nought may endure but Mutability”.
