“I love you, state." "I love you, too, Frank” - they kiss each other
In his new music theatre production, Johannes Kreidler brings – due to the worldwide rising nationalism – a reflection on society, mass movements, governance theory, and protest to the stage. He rubs in the longing for solidarity, belonging and societal sense.
In opera, this work’s protagonist is a fundamental and often over-looked one: the choir, which traditionally stands for community and comments as an authority giving sense to the proceedings. The work shows current concepts of society from patriotism to the small middle-class family as political instruments for certain interests where libidinous connections are being exploited and orchestrated: fraternity, love to a nation, sacrifice for society. The dynamics from the mass and the individual, revolt and inclusion are being dissected and aestheticized to make their own violent potential experienceable.
The composer and artist Johannes Kreidler is one of the most discussed and polarizing figures of contemporary music. There is no such thing as only music for him. Music has to do with technologies and with the politics of those technologies, with consumer behaviour, and the cultural and economic value of art.
