Beschreibung

The Freie Oper Zürich («Free Opera Zurich») works as a collective to create works of music theatre beyond all established structures. By promising «opera», the Freie Oper Zürich boldly and freely situates itself in the Swiss music theatre landscape. Orpheus, a man who transformed worlds and crossed boundaries — the archetype of the musician and the operatic subject of them all — has over the centuries slaved away, asking the existential questions of life and death, nature and artificiality. This time, the Freie Oper Zürich offers him a whole armada
of musicians to accompany him on his journey to his beloved in the underworld. Orpheus had its opening night at the Rote Fabrik in Zurich on 6 March 2018. Girod has written music that explores the interface between composition and interpretation. The ensemble is wellversed in improvisation, and Girod provides space for spontaneous organisation and interaction. By means of wit, poetry and a feel for rhythm, the Freie Oper Zürich succeeds in producing a version of Orpheus all of its own. «To add another chapter to this story needs a good deal
of courage — or of impudence. This production has both», wrote the Tages-Anzeiger.
