The Cries Of Medea

Autorenschaft
Beschreibung

"The Cries Of Medea" is a new collaboration between Canadian duo, Debi Wong (Mezzo Soprano) and James Andean (Composer) that combines sound-art, radio-drama, live electronics, freely-improvised singing and movement to reimagine the boundaries of traditional operatic performance. In this retelling of the Medea myth, the music and the performance immerse the audience in the emotional inner-world of Medea and her son, Alceste, as Medea wrestles with her pride, the betrayal of her husband and what will become of her and her son.

"The Cries of Medea" foregoes the traditional score, and instead reaches out into contemporary practices including fixed media, live electronics, and improvisation. Traditional instrumentation is replaced by an electroacoustic tape part, that is entirely constructed from recordings of Debi Wong's vocal performance, to compose a rich soundworld of melting timbres and shifting rhythms that serve as a foundation for Wong's live semi-improvised vocal performance.
