Imoinda - A Story of Love and Slavery
Imoinda is an opera depicting slavery through the eyes of two lovers Prince Oko and Princess Imoinda. The Libretto was created by the Grenadian poet Joan Anim Addo and the music by the Cuban composer Odaline de la Martinez. The original story is based on a short story by the 16th Century British woman playwright Aphra Behn.
Imoinda deals not only with the subject of slavery but also with the lowly position of women in the 16th century. The music is heavily influenced by the Afro -Cuban music that the composer experienced while living in Cuba. The work lasts just under an hour.
