What happens when five opera singers leave out their music sheet and their theory and set out to discover the Solomon Islands, Japan or even the Central Africa through ancestral lullabies, shamanist incantations, vocal games or shepherd’s calls?
It’s an extreme and unheard vocal experience, lead by four sopranos from Les Cris de Paris who took up the challenge to reproduce songs recorded by ethnomusicologists during the 20th century. These songs, despite their multiple origins and social functions, have in common to be performed by women. A work by the German composer Hanna Eimermacher, commissioned for the show, echoes to this musical world tour.
With the stage director, visual artist and performer Aliénor Dauchez, the four singers take part to a curious fashion show in which the cultural identities meet, mix and graft with each other through incredible costumes.
All along this strange ceremony, unknown rituals seem to be invented. They try to reconcile us with a confused world, torn between globalization and identitarian closure.
