Against Again Troupe’s 2017 production Frühlings Erwachen (Spring Awakening) is adapted from the German play of the same title by dramatist Frank Wedekind. Taking the play’s subtitle, “Children’s Tragedy," as an important point of departure, and referring to the narrative structure of Bertolt Brecht’s "epic theater," the performance depicts apparitions of youth who have nowhere to go under the oppression of the adult world--an education and patriarchal system that fosters the reproduction of social classes. This is the first production of the play with original composition in the Chinese-speaking world.
