OTHER PEOPLE Jarzyna’s new play, which premiered in March 2019, is based on an outstanding hiphop poetic composition by the well-known writer and playwright Dorota Masłowska. This exceptionally dynamic, agile and witty production, with marked musical and video art elements, presents several contemporary Warsawers and their neuroses, desires, uncertainties and depression. Warsaw itself is a significant character, drowning in smog, drugs and drink. In this urban anti-ballad, the problematic capital attracts careerists and losers, artists and corporate employees, students and emigrants who come here in search of happiness and apparent success. Other People is an attempt at a portrait of Poland three decades after transformation, the story of a society eaten up by prejudices and hatred of others: Ukrainians, Vietnamese, gays… Besides the TR company, participants in the production include Warsaw hiphoppers and artists, as well as dozens of the city’s inhabitants.

// AUTHOR //

GRZEGORZ JARZYNA (1968) is one of Poland’s best-known directors. He graduated from the Faculty of Arts of the Jagellonian University in Krakow before going on to study directing at the State Academy of Ludwik Solski, also in Krakow. In 1998 he became the artistic head of TR Warsaw (formerly the Teatr Rozmanitości) and from 2006 to 2013 was also its manager. He stages daring reinterpretations of classic Polish plays (Tropical Madness adapted from Witkacy, Magnetism of the Heart adapted from Aleksander Fredro), adaptations of great European novels (Mann’s Doctor Faustus, Dostoyevsky’s Idiot), contemporary drama (Sara Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis) and operas (in, for example, the Lyon Opera and the Bavarian State Opera). His productions have been invited to numerous festivals and guest performances all over Europe and the world: Avignon, Edinburgh, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Jerusalem, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, Stockholm, Paris, London, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. He has also directed at a number of other significant European theatres, such as Amsterdam’s Toneelgroep and the Schaubühne in Berlin. He has won numerous awards; in 2007 he won the Nestroy Award for his Medea at the Burgtheater, and he has twice won the Konrad Swinarski Award for best direction (1999 and 2009).

TR WARSZAWA has been one of the best-known theatres in Poland for over 10 years. It is regarded as a modern theatre open to new ideas, a theatre that cultivates the best theatrical traditions. The theatre scores highly in various rankings of young European theatres, something confirmed by the numerous awards won by the company at national and international festivals. It attracts notable directors – Grzegorz Jarzyna (artistic director since 1998 and from 2006 to 2013 also general director), Krystian Lupa, Krzysztof Warlikowski and René Pollesch, as well as representatives of younger generations such as Michał Borczuch. In searching for a new language of theatrical expression the company not only reaches for new, contemporary dramatic texts but also reinterprets the classics.

// PRESS //

Jarzyna has managed to find the key to staging Masłowska, which is to strengthen the absurdity that resounds the whole time, in the end exploding and spreading all over the stage. Instead of an attempt to persuade us that the people who reflect current extremes of the social fabric actually exist, they turn to an even greater, precisely-tailored madness.

– Aleksandra Sidor, Teatr dla Wszystkich

Jarzyna and his team have created an exceptional production.

– Tomasz Domagała, DomagałaSięKultury

Masłowska and Jarzyna hold a bent mirror up to contemporary society, and talk about what divides us.
