Beschreibung

This production by one of Latvia’s most remarkable young directors destroys stereotypes relating to the traditional interpretation of this classic text. Silences, shouts, shots, an original background music, but also the feeling that the world has not changed, in its essential dimension, since Chekhov’s time. “The subtlety with which the director has managed to interpret the play with the use of current symbols is remarkable,” the Latvian critic Ieva Rodin has written. In the Latvian theatre awards– Spelmanu Nakts – the production won four nominations, including the category of best production, while the actress playing Nina won an award for the best young artist.

// Author //

ELMARS SENKOVS (1984) One of the most significant and most-awarded contemporary Latvian directors who has won many awards and nominations, including Director of the Year (2014) and the Grand Prix in the Latvian theatre awards Spelmanu Nakts (2014 and 2015). His signature style is based on confounding stereotypes, and he uses both approaches from psychological realism and from post-dramatic theatre. He studied direction at the Latvian Academy of Culture, as well as studying pedagogy. He has worked with a number of Latvian theatres in Riga and the regions, and is currently a permanent director of the Latvian National Theatre.

//LATVIAN NATIONAL THEATRE //

In February 2019, the Latvian National Theatre celebrated its centenary. Located in the building where the independence of the Republic of Latvia was declared, the theatre is a symbiosis of tradition and innovation, the national and the foreign, the classical and the contemporary. It is a centre of culture and arts of national importance, with the aim of familiarising society with topical developments in theatre and culture. One of the most essential aims is to facilitate the development of the theatre as a cross-disciplinary medium and advance mutual cooperation among different cultural institutions.

// Press //

The creative team has modernised Chekhov in a highly inspired way (…) The set and costumes help to blow off the dust, and stress that it is a story about our souls, regardless of what the characters are wearing.
- Undine Adamaite, Diena

The world and the characters that Elmars Senkovs has created are so rich that you say to yourself: after the fourth act there has to be another still to come.
– Ieva Rodina, la.lv
