Kata Kovács, Tom O'Doherty: Sound, Movement, and Silence

Since 2011, Kata Kovács and Tom O'Doherty have been working together as a collaborative duo, creating performative installations and videos. Their work straddles the boundaries of performance and durational art, minimalist and electroacoustic music, movement, and video art. This work is often shaped by their attempts to apply decision-making processes to simple but often overlooked phenomena. They are interested in processes, sounds, and movements that are close to imperceptibility, as well as methods of transforming this raw material through layering, rhythm, pattern, and repetition. Kata Kovács is an artist and choreographer. She is originally from Hungary. Tom O'Doherty is an artist and musician. He is originally from Ireland. Both live and work in Berlin, as a collaborative duo since 2011.

Ligia Lewis: Sorrow Swag

"Sorrow Swag" was developed from adaptations of two plays, "Antigone" by Jean Anouilh and "Not I" by Samuel Beckett. Through their translations, both Antigone and Billie Whitelaw (the mouth of "Not I") have become emblems of conviction and embodiment. They form the backbone of the performance along with other texts by Simone Weil and Chris Kraus. I am primarily concerned with the study of "embodiment," a performative practice I have been working on with Brian Getnick to create in him a meticulously created hybrid body in constant flux. We use Stanislavski's acting technique and the practice of Authentic Movement. We have tried to go beyond satire to embody the instability of a being that defines itself through a permanent desire to become "different." Through this condition, the voices of Antigone and Beckett's muse Billie Whitelaw evolve and the stage becomes a platform for a body struggling for conviction, empathy and suffering.

Jessy-Layne Tuddenham: A Dance for a Sub-conscious State.

Inspired by the work of artist Marcos Lutyens and a long exploration of yoga and meditation practices, Jessy has used her dance scholarship to explore the art of hypnosis and subconscious states of mind. Her goal has been to develop a simple technology based on the human voice in words and patterns of loops in rhythm that she hopes to bring to the stage to explore a new way of interactive dance performance. Her motivations are questions around kinesthetic empathy as well as the obvious manipulation of the audience's experience when consuming dance. Although Jessy is always hopeful of creating aesthetically challenging work, she's not looking to blow anyone away here. With her hypnotic work, she hopes to give the nervous system a reprieve. Out of her research has come a "solo" (duet and beyond) where dance, music and an accompanying voice come together to hypnotize an audience into imaginative worlds and unconscious spheres. It's a wave movement in and out of stillness, in and out of dance, and in and out of whispered stories that are at once true and unreal. Sit back and relax as you are about to enter a deep...state...of...sleep....

Kata Kovács, Tom O'Doherty: Sound, Movement, and Silence

Seit 2011 arbeiten Kata Kovács und Tom O’Doherty als kollaboratives Duo zusammen und kreieren performative Installationen und Videos. Ihre Arbeit bewegt sich an den Grenzen von Performance und Durational Art, minimalistischer und elektroakustischer Musik, Bewegung und Videokunst. Diese Arbeit wird häufig dadurch geformt, dass sie versuchen, Entscheidungsprozesse auf einfache, aber oft übersehene Phänomene anzuwenden. Ihr Interesse gilt Prozessen, Sounds und Bewegungen, die nahe an der Nicht-Wahrnehmbarkeit liegen sowie an Methoden, dieses Rohmaterial durch Schichtung, Rhythmus, Pattern und Wiederholung zu transformieren. Kata Kovács ist Künstlerin und Choreografin. Sie kommt ursprünglich aus Ungarn. Tom O’Doherty ist Künstler und Musiker. Er kommt ursprünglich aus Irland. Beide leben und arbeiten in Berlin, seit 2011 als kollaboratives Duo.

Ligia Lewis: Sorrow Swag

“Sorrow Swag” wurde aus Adaptionen zweier Theaterstücke entwickelt: “Antigone” von Jean Anouilh und “Nicht ich” von Samuel Beckett. Durch ihre Übersetzungen haben sich sowohl Antigone als auch Billie Whitelaw (der Mund von “Nicht ich”) zu Emblemen von Überzeugung und Verkörperung entwickelt. Sie bilden das Rückgrat der Performance zusammen mit weiteren Texten von Simone Weil und Chris Kraus. Mich beschäftigt in erster Linie das Studium des “embodiment” (Verkörperung), eine performative Praxis, an der ich mit Brian Getnick gearbeitet habe, um in ihm einen akribisch genau erschaffenen hybriden Körper in ständigem Fluss zu kreieren. Wir benutzen Stanislawskis Schauspieltechnik und die Praxis des Authentic Movement. Wir haben versucht, über die Satire hinaus zu gehen, um die Instabilität eines Wesens zu verkörpern, das sich selbst durch das permanente Verlangen, “anders” zu werden, definiert. Durch diesen Zustand entwickeln sich die Stimmen von Antigone und Becketts Muse Billie Whitelaw und die Bühne wird zur Plattform für einen Körper, der um Überzeugung, Empathie und Leiden ringt.

Obwohl Jessy immer voller Hoffnung ist, ästhetisch anspruchsvolle Arbeit zu kreieren, will sie hier keinen umhauen. Mit ihrer hypnotischen Arbeit hofft sie, dem Nervensystem eine Atempause zu verschaffen. Aus ihrer Forschung ist ein “Solo” entstanden (Duett und darüber hinaus), in dem Tanz, Musik und eine begleitende Stimme zusammen kommen, um ein Publikum in phantasievolle Welten und unbewusste Sphären zu hypnotisieren. Es ist eine Wellenbewegung in und aus der Ruhe, in den und aus dem Tanz und in und aus geflüsterten Geschichten, die gleichzeitig wahr und irreal sind. Lehnen Sie sich zurück und entspannen Sie sich, wenn Sie gleich in einen tiefen…Zustand…von…Schlaf…
