Eifo Efi

In “Eifo Efi”, the performers offer their understanding of two persons, as more than what two people can be. The performers fill the performance space with versions or echoes of themselves. While only two bodies appear, reflective elements and diverting strategies enhance the visual to stimulate the sensorial, making the ‘just two’ reveal others’ presences.

The multiple is not automatically a multiplicity. Composition by addition, layering, or simple juxtaposition would not achieve a multiplicity. Nor could a coherent compositional whole suffice. This piece is a distinct alchemy of juxtaposition – an assembly of theatrical elements, multilayered movement, and spoken language that is unusually ripe or potent for differentiation. Emerging from a body of choreographic work that explores (among things) the perception of appearances and the production of visual paradox, “Eifo Efi” names the urge to speak specifically from within theatrical constructions and to find new modes of intertwining the experience of the audience with that of the performers. Returning to the format of a duet, Ioannis Mandafounis and Fabrice Mazliah use their close relationship as collaborators to produce a performative realm of doubled doubles: multiplying the perception of two bodies via dimensions of imagined reality and reflections in the actual material of the set. At once whole and multiple, the piece invites untangling the who and where of the spectacle. The Deleuzian movement of thought, as multiplicity, rendered unpretentious, fleshy, and even (gasp) entertaining!

Born in Athens in 1981, Ioannis Mandafounis studied dance at the National school of Athens and at the Conservatoire de Paris. Before becoming a freelance choreographer, he was part of the Gothenburg Opera Ballet, the Nederlands Dans Theater II and in 2005 became a member of the Forsythe Company where he’s still a guest on a regular basis. In 2004 he formed the “Lemurius company” together with Katerina Skiada and Anastasis Gouliaris in Athens with whom he created the pieces “Provalondas tin Skia” (2005), “Anthropines diastasis” (2007), “Crosstalk” (2009) and “Yperparagogi” (2011), that have been presented at the International Kalamata Dance Festival and in the Athens and Epidaurus Festival. Parallel to his work as a choreographer Ioannis teaches improvisation workshops from the point of view of the ancient martial art Budo, as well as making choreographic works for other companies and schools such as: Ballet Junior de Geneva, Palucca Schule Dresden, Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt and others. Together with Fabrice Mazliah he co-created “P.A.D.” (2007), commissioned by the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, and the group work “HUE” created for the Forsythe Company, in collaboration with six artists from the group at the Bockenheimer depot in Frankfurt.

Born in Geneva in 1972, Fabrice Mazliah studied dance in his hometown at the Ecole de danse de Genève and then at the National Dance School of Athens and at the Rudra-Béjart Atelier in Lausanne. He was part of the Harris Mandafounis Dance Company in Athens and of the Nederlands Dans Theater, before joining in 1997 the Ballett Frankfurt directed by William Forsythe and continued in 2005 with the Forsythe Company. Fabrice has been creating throughout the years numerous projects and choreographic works, like: “The magic of understanding” (1998) Mousonturm Frankfurt, “My left pussy foot” (1999) TAT Ballett Frankfurt, the solo “Vu d’ici” (2000) TAT Frankfurt, “Marche au millieu…” (2001) le Manege d’Onex Geneva and “Home” (2003) at the Forum Meyrin Geneva, both created with Gilbert Mazliah and Roberta Mosca, “remote versions” (2003) and “Double B(l)ind (2004), conceived in collaboration with Agnes Chekroun and Jone San Martin, produced by William Forsythe and performed at the Bockenheimer Depot in Frankfurt. In collaboration with the director Lutz Gregor, the three of them created a choreographic short movie “meat me”, which was part of a film called “Frankfurt dance cuts” (screened on Arte in 2005). Together with Ioannis Mandafounis he co-created “P.A.D.” (2007), commissioned by the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, and the group work “HUE” created for the Forsythe Company, in collaboration with six artists from the group at the Bockenheimer depot in Frankfurt. Fabrice created a solo adaptation from this piece called “HUE score –6” (2010) presented in Japan by the Goethe Institut.

In 2009 he formed together with Fabrice Mazliah and May Zarhy the collaborative trio MAMAZA and created together “ZERO” (2009), “Cover Up” (2011) and “THE NIKEL PROJECT”, such as the social installations “ASINGELINE” and “GARDEN STATE” which have been shown and co-produced by numerous venues and festivals, such as the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Künstlerhaus mousonturm Frankfurt, The Forsythe Company, Les Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis, PACT Zollverein Essen. With their social installations they’re on tour throughout the world.

Welches Potenzial eröffnen zwei Menschen auf der Bühne, und wie können sie ihre Zweiheit hinter sich lassen? Diesen Fragen stellen sich die beiden Performer von „Eifo Efi“, den Raum mit verzerrten Abbildern und Echos ihrer selbst füllend. Lediglich zwei Körper befinden sich auf der Bühne, doch Reflexionen und Verfremdungen potenzieren die visuellen Eindrücke und stimulieren die Sinne; die „zwei Einzelnen“ scheinen sich zu einem Ensemble der Anderen aufzufächern.

Aus einer Vielzahl wird nicht automatisch eine Vielheit. Ebenso wenig führt eine aus Addition, Überlagerung und einfachen Gegensätzen entstandene Choreografie zur Vielheit. „Eifo Efi“ erschafft eine einzigartige Alchemie der Gegensätze, eine außergewöhnlich ausgereifte Kombination aus theatralen Elementen, vielfältigen Bewegungsschichten und Sprache, offen für Differenzierungen.

In ihrem aktuellen Stück setzen die beiden Performer ihre bisherige choreografische Arbeit fort, in der sie sich (unter anderem) der Wahrnehmung der Erscheinungswelt und der Erschaffung visueller Paradoxa gewidmet haben. In „Eifo Efi“ nun geht es zum einen um den Drang, explizit aus einer theaterspezifischen Situation heraus zu sprechen, zum anderen um neue Möglichkeiten, die Erfahrungen des Publikums mit denen der Performer zu verbinden. Bei ihrer Rückkehr zur Duett-Form können sich Ioannis Mandafounis und Fabrice Mazliah auf eine vertrauensvolle Nähe stützen, und gemeinsam erschaffen sie ein performatives Reich der doppelten Dopplungen: Mithilfe imaginärer Wirklichkeiten und ganz realer Reflexionen im Bühnenbild werden die beiden Darsteller ins Unendliche vervielfacht. Die Inszenierung – Einheit wie Vielheit gleichermaßen – lädt dazu ein, den Fragen des Wer und Wo auf den Grund zu gehen. Deleuze‘ Gedankenmodell der Vielheit für die Bühne umgesetzt: unprätentiös, sehr konkret und sogar (Entschuldigung!) unterhaltsam.

Ioannis Mandafounis wurde 1981 in Athen geboren, wo er auch an der nationalen Tanzschule studierte, ehe er sein Studium am Pariser Konservatorium fortsetzte. Vor seiner Zeit als freier Choreograf tanzte er im Ensemble des Gothenburg Opera Ballett und des Nederland Dans Theater II und wurde 2005 Mitglied der Forsythe Company, bei der er nach wie vor regelmäßiger Gast ist. Gemeinsam mit Katerina Skiada und Anastasis Gouliaris gründete er 2004 in Athen die Lemurius Company; daraus gingen die Stücke „Provalondas tin Skia“ (2005), „Anthropines diastasis“ (2007), „Crosstalk“ (2009) und „Yperparagogi“ (2011) hervor, die auf dem International Kalamata Dance Festival und dem Athens & Epidaurus Festival gezeigt wurden. Gemeinsam mit Fabrice Mazliah schuf er im Auftrag des Athens & Epidaurus Festivals das Stück „P.A.D.“ (2007) sowie für die Forsythe Company die Inszenierung „HUE“, eine Kollaboration mit sechs Tänzern des Ensembles, die im Bockenheimer Depot in Frankfurt, aufgeführt wurde

Daneben gibt Mandafounis auf Grundlage der traditionellen Kampfkunst Budo Workshops für Improvisation und arbeitet als Choreograf für andere Gruppen und Schulen wie das Ballet Junior de Genève, die Palucca-Hochschule für Tanz, Dresden, und die Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Frankfurt.

Der 1972 in Genf geborene Fabrice Mazliah studierte zunächst an der École de Danse de Genève, dann an der nationalen Tanzhochschule von Athen und am Rudra-Béjart Atelier in Lausanne Tanz. Er war Mitglied der Athener Harris Mandafounis Dance Company und des Nederland Dans Theater, ging 1997 ans Ballett Frankfurt unter der Leitung von William Forsythe und schloss sich schließlich 2005 der Forsythe Company an. Mazliah hat unzählige Projekte und Choreografien verwirklicht, darunter „The magic of understanding“ (1998; Mousonturm, Frankfurt), „My left pussy foot“ (1999; TAT Ballett, Frankfurt) und das Solo „Vu d’ici“ (2000; TAT, Frankfurt) sowie mit Gilbert Mazliah und Roberta Mosca „Marche au millieu …“ (2001; Le Manège d’Onex, Genf) und „Home“ (2003; Forum Meyrin, Genf) und mit Agnes Chekroun und Jone San Martin „remote versions“ (2003) und „Double B(l)ind“ (2004), die beide von William Forsythe produziert und am Bockenheimer Depot aufgeführt wurden. Gemeinsam mit dem Regisseur Lutz Gregor drehten die drei darüber hinaus im Rahmen des Films „Frankfurt dance cuts“ (ausgestrahlt 2005 auf Arte) den choreografischen Kurzfilm „meat me“. Gemeinsam mit Ioannis Mandafounis schuf er im Auftrag des Athens & Epidaurus Festivals das Stück „P.A.D.“ (2007) sowie für die Forsythe Company die Inszenierung „HUE“, eine Kollaboration mit sechs Tänzern des Ensembles, die im Bockenheimer Depot, Frankfurt, aufgeführt wurde. Von letzterem Stück entwickelte Mazliah auch eine Soloversion, „HUE score -6“ (2010), die vom japanischen Goethe-Institut präsentiert wurde. Fabrice Mazliah gibt in mehreren Ländern Seminare und Improvisations-Workshops für professionelle und nicht professionelle Tänzer sowie für Kunststudierende.

2009 gründeten Ioannis Mandafounis , Fabrice Mazliah und May Zarhy das Kollektiv MAMAZA und es entstanden die Inszenierungen „ZERO“ (2009) und „Cover Up“ (2011) und „THE NIKEL PROJECT“ sowie die sozialen Installtionen „ASINGELINE“ und „GARDEN STATE“, die in Koproduktion mit verschiedenen Institutionen und Festivals verwirklicht wurden, darunter das Kunstenfestivaldesarts, das Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, Frankfurt, die Forsythe Company, Les Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis und das PACT Zollverein Essen.
