“Movements are the wildest, freest, most irresponsible, most un-teachable of all things. Of course, you can catch them and sort them and place them as forms and images, which bend into concepts, into thought. But movements do not live in thought; they live in the body.” Transforming these thoughts by the author Virginia Woolf into movement is the driving force behind May Zarhy’s collaboration with Kathryn Enright. And so the two performers navigate their way through the space in search of a myriad of nuances, constantly moving between a thing and its possible meaning. Movements as the emergence of forms that are what they are, what they really are. And just when you thought you had figured it out, the question arises anew. 1325 stands for the UN resolution that asserts the important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts. As one member of the choreographic trio MAMAZA, May Zarhy is currently an artist in residence at the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm. 1325 is her first collaboration with the American artist Kathryn Enright.

Born in Israel in 1984, May Zarhy created her first piece for the National Choreography Biennale “Shades in Dance 2001” Tel Aviv, before moving to the Netherlands in 2002 to study dance at the Rotterdam Dance Academy. In 2005, she assisted William Forsythe in the creation “3 Atmospheric Studies”. In 2007 May was a member in ex.e.r.ce in Montpellier France, directed by Mathilde Monnier and Xavier Le Roy. In 2009 she formed together with Fabrice Mazliah and Ioannis Mandafounis the collaborative trio “MAMAZA” and created together “ZERO” (2009), “Cover Up” (2011), “The Nikel Project – songs&poems” (2012), as well as “Pausing” (2012) with Ioannis Mandafounis, which have been shown and co-produced by numerous venues and festivals. With their piece “Pausing”, Ioannis and May have been selected to be part of Modul-Dance 2012, as well as part of the “Reso – Réseau Danse Suisse”.

MAMAZA created together the installation works “ASINGELINE an enacted thought” (2011) which has toured in Africa in 2013, “Context without Content” (2012) and “Garden State” (2014). They have been Associated Artists in deSingel Antwerp in 2011-2012, and resident artists in Mousonturm Frankfurt in 2012-2014 thanks to the support of the Doppel Pass program of the Bundes Kultur Stiftung Germany. Parallel to this, May choreographs and teaches choreography and theory seminars to students and professional dancers.

Born in the United States, Kathryn Enright currently splits her time between London, UK and Berlin, Germany, working as an independent dance artist, scholar, and teacher. Kathryn holds an MFA in Choreography from The Ohio State University, an MA in Dance Ethnography from Gallatin University/TISCH in New York City, and a BA in English from Bowdoin College in Maine. In 2011 she was invited overseas by William Forsythe to rehearse with his company in Frankfurt, Germany. Since then, she has worked with choreographers Chris Haring/Liquid Loft, Laurent Chétouane, film director Mara Mattuschka, and performed in an installation by William Forsythe. Prior to moving to Europe, she danced with Bebe Miller, Kathleen Hermsdorf, Lily Skove, Eszter Salamon and Christine De Schmedt, among others. Kathryn’s choreography has been shown various venues throughout the US including the Joyce Soho and Judson Church, NYC. In 2012/2013 she was a guest artist for Motion Bank, headed by William Forsythe.

„Bewegungen sind das Wildeste, Freieste, Unverantwortlichste und Unlehrbarste von allem.“ Dieser von Virginia Woolf beschriebene Gedanke ist für May Zarhy und Kathryn Enright die treibende Kraft hinter ihrer Performance 1325. Die beiden Choreografinnen und Tänzerinnen navigieren darin frei durch den Raum, zärtlich, schrill, triumphal, überbordend oder unsichtbar, auf der Suche nach Myriaden von körperlichen, klanglichen und atmosphärischen Zwischentönen und immer auf dem Sprung in den Abstand zwischen einer Sache und ihrer Bedeutung. Als Teil des choreografischen Trios MAMAZA ist May Zarhy Residentin am Künstlerhaus Mousonturm. 1325 ist die erste Zusammenarbeit mit der amerikanischen Künstlerin Kathryn Enright.

Ihr erstes Stück schuf die 1984 in Israel geborene May Zarhy 2001 für die Nationale Choreografie-Biennale „Shades in Dance“, Tel Aviv. Im Jahr darauf ging sie in die Niederlande und begann ein Tanzstudium an der Rotterdamse Dansacademie (NL). 2005 assistierte sie bei „3 Atmospheric Studies“ von William Forsythe. 2007 war sie Mitglied des von Mathilde Monnier und Xavier Le Roy geleiteten Projekts „ex.e.r.ce“ in Montpellier. 2009 dann gründete sie mit Fabrice Mazliah und Ioannis Mandafounis das Kollektiv MAMAZA, und es entstanden die Inszenierungen „ZERO“ (2009), „Cover Up“ (2011), „The Nikel Project – Songs & Poems“ (2012) und „Pausing“ (2012, nur Zarhy und Mandafounis), die in Ko-Produktion mit verschiedenen Institutionen und Festivals verwirklicht wurden, darunter das Kunstenfestivaldesarts, das Künstlerhaus Mousonturm, Frankfurt, die Forsythe Company, das Theatre de l’Usine Genève, das Les Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis, das PACT Zollverein Essen, das Festspielhaus Hellerau, das deSingel, Antwerpen, und die Onassis Foundation, Athen.

Zusammen schufen sie die Installationen „ASINGELINE, an enacted thought“ (2011), „Context without Content“ (2012) und „Garden State“ (2014). Mit „ASINGELINE“ tourten sie 2013 durch Afrika. MAMAZA waren 2011/2012 Artistes Associés am deSingel, Antwerpen, und von 2012 bis 2014 Resident Artists am Frankfurter Mousonturm (mit Unterstützung des „Doppelpass“-Programms der Kulturstiftung des Bundes). Mit ihrem Stück „Pausing“ wurden Zarhy und Mandafounis 2012 im Rahmen von Modul-Dance und Reso – Réseau Danse Suisse gefördert und zu einer Tournee durch die Schweiz eingeladen. May Zarhy ist außerdem als Dozentin für Theorie und Praxis des zeitgenössischen Tanzes tätig und gibt Seminare für Studenten und professionelle Tänzer.

Kathryn Enright wurde in den USA geboren und teilt sich ihre Arbeits- und Lebenszeit derzeit zwischen London und Berlin ein. Sie arbeitet als freie Tänzerin und Dozentin. Kathryn hat ihren Master in Choreografie an der Ohio State University absolviert, einen weiteren Master in Tanz-Ethnographie von der Gallatin Universität / TISCH in New York City, sowie einen Bachelor in Englisch von Bowdoin College in Maine. Im Jahr 2011 wurde sie von William Forsythe nach Deutschland eingeladen, um dort mit seiner Kompanie in Frankfurt am Main zu proben. Seitdem hat sie mit Choreografen wie Chris Haring (von Liquid Loft), Laurent Chétouane und der Regisseurin Mara Mattuschka und tanzte in einer Installation von William Forsythe. Zudem arbeitete sie u.a. mit Bebe Miller, Kathleen Hermsdorf, Lily Skove, Eszter Salamon und Christine De Schmedt. Ihre eigenen Choreographien wurden u.a. im Joyce Soho and Judson Church, New York gezeigt. In 2012/2013 war sie Gastkünstler für Motion Bank von William Forsythe.
