QUÉ BOLERO O EN TIEMPOS DE INSEGURIDAD NACIONAL

What does it mean to be part of a nation and its people today? Colectivo Malasangre challenges modern forms of cultural colonialism with force, precision and glitter. Lazaro Benitez, Luis Carricaburu and Ricardo Sarmiento were born in Cuba in the 1990s, between the fall of socialism and a period of economic crisis. Like many of their generation, they left Cuba to settle in Europe. In Qué Bolero o En Tiempos de Inseguridad Nacional they summon up the gestures of Cuban popular culture that constitute them: gestures of Havana nights, congas of Santiago de Cuba or the carnivals. Against a makeshift set that recounts precariousness and migration, stories of exile and revolt, they confront an emblematic work of Western culture: Ravel’s Boléro. The bodies of the three artists enter the Boléro “like a tropical hurricane” in a performance that is a mischievous, off-centre look at the “national body”, which finds all its meaning in mestizaje.

In Colectivo Malasangre Lazaro Benitez, Luis Carricaburu und Ricardo Sarmiento combine different experiences in the fields of arts, dance, theater and activism to accompany each other in a process of constant reconfiguration of their identities in a European creative and political environment that also represented hostility. The artists explore how they inhabit a territory, experimenting with forms of coexistence and construction of identities and working from horizontality as a key tool to dismantle forms of modern colonialism.

Was bedeutet es heute, Teil einer Nation und ihres Volkes zu sein? Das Colectivo Malasangre fordert zeitgenössische Formen des kulturellen Kolonialismus mit Kraft, Präzision und Glitzer heraus. Lazaro Benitez, Luis Carricaburu und Ricardo Sarmiento wurden in den 90er Jahren in Kuba geboren, in der Zeit zwischen dem Zusammenbruch des Sozialismus und einer Wirtschaftskrise. Wie viele ihrer Generation, verließen sie Kuba, um sich in Europa niederzulassen. In Qué Bolero o En Tiempos de Inseguridad Nacional beschwören sie die Gesten der kubanischen Populärkultur, die sie ausmachen: die Gesten der Nächte von Havanna, der Congas von Santiago de Cuba oder des Karnevals. Einer provisorischen Kulisse, die von Prekarität und Migration, von Exil und Revolte erzählt, stellen sie ein emblematisches Werk westlicher Kultur gegenüber: Ravels Boléro. Die Körper der drei Künstler*innen dringen in den Boléro ein „wie ein tropischer Hurrikan” in einer Performance, die einen schelmischen, schrägen Blick auf den „nationalen Körper” wirft, der seine Bedeutung im Begriff der Mestizaje findet.

Im Colectivo Malasangre kombinieren Lazaro Benitez, Luis Carricaburu und Ricardo Sarmiento unterschiedliche Erfahrungen in den Bereichen Kunst, Tanz, Theater und Aktivismus, um sich gegenseitig in einem Prozess der ständigen Neuordnung ihrer Identitäten in einem europäischen kreativen und politischen Umfeld, das zugleich auch Feindseligkeit darstellt, zu begleiten. Die Künstler erforschen, auf welche Weise sie ein Territorium bewohnen, experimentieren mit Formen der Koexistenz und der Konstruktion von Identitäten und arbeiten ausgehend von der Horizontalität als einem Schlüsselinstrument zum Aufbrechen von Erscheinungsformen des modernen Kolonialismus.
