Inspired by the queerness of the insect world, Danse Macabre and the Burning of the Bugs is an absurd tragic-comic response to the horror of the bug Apocalypse.

Danse Macabre and the Burning of the Bugs is a tragic-comic response to the current species extinction in the insect world, the horror of the silent Bug Apocalypse, the violence we inflict on the planet and each other and the absurdity of our self-induced overheated end of days. In the 90’s when all the performers were kids, there were 4 times more flying insects than now. Since then the amount of beetles, flies, bees and butterflies has reduced by 75% – in just 30 years! If we don’t queer the f*ck up, we are not going to survive! DMBB dives into a multi-layered exploration of the queerness of the insect world – loud, colourful, messy, full of sheddings, transformations, evolutions and deaths.

Joni Barnard (them / they) is excited by queer and trickster approaches to life and work, practices of consent and radical liberation. Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, Joni is currently living and working in Berlin. Joni is an artist, live performer, rapper, choreographer, dramaturg and cultivator of embodied activism. They are adventurous and wild and find extreme joy in collaboration, experimentation and play!


Marc Philipp Gabriel (he/him) is a white Berlin based performance artist working between body, voice, installation, video and architecture from the perspective of dance and movement. His work offers unconventional angles on social norms, contributing to the discourse of future models of how to be together on and with planet Earth.

Inspiriert von der queeren Welt der Insekten, versucht die Performance dem Horror des Artensterbens auf tragisch-komische Weise zu begegnen.

Danse Macabre and the Burning of the Bugs ist eine tragisch-komische Antwort auf das derzeitige Artensterben von Insekten, das Grauen der stillen Käfer-Apokalypse und der Gewalt, die wir dem Planeten und uns zugleich antun.

In den 1990er Jahren, als die Performer*innen selbst noch Kinder waren, gab es viermal so viele fliegende Insekten wie heute. In den letzten 30 Jahren hat sich die Zahl der Käfer, Fliegen, Bienen und Schmetterlinge um 75% verringert. Wenn wir uns nicht endlich aufraffen und ändern, werden wir alle nicht überleben!

Danse Macabre and the Burning of the Bugs taucht ein in eine vielschichtige Erkundung der Queerness von Insekten – in eine Welt, die laut, bunt, chaotisch ist und voller Häutungen, Verwandlungen, Entwicklungen und Todesfälle.

Joni Barnard (them / they) ist begeistert von queeren und kreativen Ansätzen für Leben und Arbeit, Praktiken der Konsensfindung und radikalen Befreiung. Ursprünglich aus Johannesburg, Südafrika, lebt und arbeitet Joni derzeit in Berlin. Joni ist Künstlerin, Performerin, Rapperin, Choreografin, Dramaturgin und Aktivistin, die Freude an Zusammenarbeit, im Experimentieren und im Spiel findet.

Marc Philipp Gabriel (he/him) ist ein weißer, in Berlin lebender Performance-Künstler, der an der Schnittstelle von Tanz und Bewegung, Körper und Stimme, Installation, Video und Architektur arbeitet. Seine Arbeit bietet unkonventionelle Perspektiven auf gesellschaftliche Normen und trägt damit zum Diskurs über zukünftige Formen des Zusammenlebens auf und mit dem Planeten Erde bei.
