SHOW BUSINESS

There’s no business like show business. Melanie Jame Wolf and Teresa Vittucci explore the problems and pleasures of the question: What does it take to make a show great? Both known for their intense solo work and powerful stage presence, the two artists take a close look at popular entertainment, theater and the politics of spectacle, exploring the long-held trope of the double act: its tender intimacies, its power dynamics, but also the ways in which it is triangulated by its audience and by the stage space itself.

The performance invites us to critically and humorously question the tension between seeing and being seen, examining together the poetics and politics of the show as a complex cultural phenomenon.

MELANIE JAME WOLF is a Berlin-based visual artist and choreographer. She works solo and with friends, making interdisciplinary works about power, flows of capital and the pervasive phenomenon of “show business”. She explores these economies and entanglements in works for gallery, theater and screen spaces. She approaches installation and the moving image as an extended choreographic practice, using humor as a strategy for critical possibility and working with language in subliminal and surprising ways. Her first solo performance, Mira Fuchs, premiered at the 2015 Tanztage Berlin at Sophiensæle. Her recent works for the stage include TONIGHT (Sophiensæle, 2019) and SHOW BUSINESS (2021). Her recent solo exhibitions include Two Years Elapse Between the Third and Fourth Act at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin and The Creep at feldfünf, Berlin.

TERESA VITTUCI is a Vienna-born artist currently based in Zurich. Her practice is rooted in contemporary dance performance and explores feminist and queer perspectives on pop culture, history and religion. Bad jokes are always part of the process. She works as a solo artist and also collaborates with other artists such as Colin Self, Annina Machaz, Simone Aughterlony, Nils A. Lange, MJ Wolf, Michael Turinsky and Claire V. Sobottke. In 2019, Teresa received the Swiss Dance Award for the first part of her trilogy HATE, ME TENDER. From 2019-2022, she was a Young Associate Artist at Tanzhaus Zürich. She is currently busy touring and working on the completion of her trilogy, as well as working on other projects and guest lecturing at the art academies in Zurich and Bern.

There’s no business like show business. Melanie Jame Wolf und Teresa Vittucci gehen der Frage nach: Was braucht es, um eine Show great zu machen? Bekannt für ihre intensiven Solo-Arbeiten und kraftvolle Bühnenpräsenz nehmen die beiden Künstlerinnen Entertainment, Theater und die Politik des Spektakels unter die Lupe und erforschen die altbewährte Trope des komischen Duos (Double Act): die zärtlichen Intimitäten, die Macht über das Publikum, aber auch, welchen Einfluss die Zuschauer*innen und der Bühnenraum auf die Show ausüben.

Die Performance lädt uns ein, das Spannungsfeld von Sehen und Gesehen-werden kritisch und humorvoll zu hinterfragen und gemeinsam die Poetik und Politik der Show als komplexes kulturelles Phänomen zu beleuchten.

MELANIE JAME WOLF ist eine bildende Künstlerin, Choreografin und Autorin. Sie beschäftigt sich in ihren Performances, Filmen und Installationen mit Ökonomien, insbesondere im trüben Feld des immateriellen Kapitals: das Soziale, das Kulturelle, das Affektive. Dabei nimmt sie besonders deren Wechselwirkungen mit Gender, Pop, Mythos, Moral, Sinnlichkeit und Klasse ins Visier. Ihre Arbeiten wurden in Galerien, Theatern und Filmfestivals auf der ganzen Welt gezeigt. Ihre beiden letzten großen Performance-Werke HIGHNESS und TONIGHT hatten in den Sophiensælen Premiere. Ihre Solo-Ausstellungen Two Years Elapse Between the Third and Fourth Act und The Creep waren im Künstlerhaus Bethanien und im feldfünf zu sehen.

TERESA VITTUCI ist eine in Wien geborene Künstlerin, die derzeit in Zürich lebt. Ihre Praxis ist im Bereich der zeitgenössischen Tanzperformance verwurzelt und erforscht feministische und queere Perspektiven auf Popkultur, Geschichte und Religion. Schlechte Witze sind dabei immer Teil des Prozesses. Sie arbeitet als Solokünstlerin und kollaboriert auch mit anderen Künstler*innen wie Colin Self, Annina Machaz, Simone Aughterlony, Nils A. Lange, MJ Wolf, Michael Turinsky und Claire V. Sobottke. Im Jahr 2019 erhielt Teresa den Schweizer Tanzpreis für den ersten Teil ihrer Trilogie HATE, ME TENDER. Von 2019-2022 war sie Young Associate Artist am Tanzhaus Zürich. Derzeit ist sie mit Tourneen und der Arbeit an der Fertigstellung ihrer Trilogie beschäftigt, sowie mit weiteren Projekten und Gastdozenturen an den Kunsthochschulen in Zürich und Bern.
