Artefacts: Ghosts of the laborers

Inspiriert von den verbliebenen Spuren der industriellen Vergangenheit im urbanen Raum Berlins untersucht die Choreografin I Jung Lim, wie sich der historische Geist auf die Gesellschaft auswirkt. In diesem Projekt nähert sie sich auf künstlerische Weise dem zweiten signifikanten Moment deutscher Ideologie. Aus dem Blickwinkel einer außenstehenden Forscherin fördert sie verdeckte soziale Überreste und kulturelle Relikte zutage und verwebt den soziokulturellen Hintergrund der von materialistischem Denken geprägten Industriezeit mit archetypischen Bildern. In der Verbindung von industriellen Objekten und menschlichen Körpern entsteht eine einstündige, symbolisch bewegende Körperlandschaftsmalerei.

I Jung Lims Langzeituntersuchung von Ideologie begann 2017 mit dem Projekt „Eine Studie über die verschiedenen Positionen der Wirbelsäule in Verbindung zur Anmut des menschlichen Körpers“, das sich mit dem im 18. Jahrhundert in Deutschland aufgekommenen Begriff der „Anmut“ auseinandersetzte. In der Folge weitete sich ihr Interesse am soziokulturellen Hintergrund Deutschlands auf die Industriegeschichte aus. Ihre Inspiration durch verbliebene industriellen Spuren vertiefte sich 2019 durch ihre Tanzforschung zum deutschen Steinkohlenbergbau. Ihre Solo-Performance „A Historical Tracing and Reproduction of the Motion between the Human Body and Industrial Artefacts“ (2020), die alles von ihrem Körper Erlebte als Live-Archivierung auf die Bühne brachte, entwickelt sich mithilfe von vier Tänzern zum neuen Projekt „Artefacts: Ghosts of the laborers“ im Rahmen der Trilogie, eine Erzählung, in der sie die umfangreichen Diskurse – von Politik und sozialen Aktivitäten bis hin zu Philosophie, Kultur und Ästhetik – weiter ausbaut.

Inspired by the remaining traces of the industrial past in the urban space of Berlin, choreographer I Jung Lim examines how the historical spirit of this past affects society. In this project, she approaches the second significant moment of German ideology in an artistic way. From the perspective of an outside researcher, she unearths hidden social leftovers and cultural relics and interweaves the socio-cultural background of the industrial age – an age characterized by materialistic thinking – with archetypal images. By connecting industrial objects and human bodies, her goal is to create a landscape painting of the body and some of its companion symbols.

I Jung Lim’s long-term investigation of ideology began in 2017 with the project “A Study of the Different Positions of the Spine in Connection with the Grace of the Human Body“, which dealt with the concept of “gracefulness“ that emerged in Germany in the 18th century. As a result, her interest in Germany’s socio-cultural background expanded to include industrial history. The inspiration she gained from remaining industrial-age traces increased in 2019 through her dance research on German coal mining. Her solo performance “A Historical Tracing and Reproduction of the Motion between the Human Body and Industrial Artefacts“ (2020), which brought everything she had experienced to the stage as a kind of live archival act, developed into the new project “Artefacts: Ghosts of the Laborers” as part of the trilogy. This narrative, created with the help of four dancers, adds to ongoing discourses in diverse fields, from politics and social activities to philosophy, culture, and aesthetics.
