An vier Tagen bespielt die belgische Tanzkompanie Rosas die Ausstellungshalle der Neuen Nationalgalerie mit einer eigens für das Gebäude entwickelten Performance. Die Besucher*innen erleben so ein einzigartiges Zusammenspiel von Architektur, Skulptur, Musik und Tanz. Mit ihrer speziell für unterschiedliche Museumsräume konzipierten Serie „Dark Red“ war Rosas zuletzt im Kölner Kolumba und in der Fondation Beyeler in Basel zu sehen.

Mit „Dark Red“ findet erstmals eine aufwendige, über mehrere Tage fortlaufende, tänzerische Choreografie in dem ikonischen Museumsbau von Mies van der Rohe statt. Der weitläufige, transparente Raum der Ausstellungshalle bildet die Bühne der eigens für die Neue Nationalgalerie konzipierten Tanzperformance der belgischen Choreografin Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, die in Zusammenarbeit mit den Tänzer*innen Cassiel Gaube und Soa Ratsifandrihana, der Flötistin Chryssi Dimitriou und der bildenden Künstlerin Ann Veronica Janssens entstanden ist.

Das Motiv des Atmens und der Dialog mit der Architektur der Neuen Nationalgalerie

Ausgangspunkt für die Performance ist das Motiv des Atmens, das seit langem ein wichtiges choreografisches Prinzip De Keersmaekers ist und vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Pandemie eine neue Relevanz bekommt. Live aufgeführt wird die L’Opera per Flauto von Salvatore Sciarrino, in der das lebensnotwendige Bedürfnis des Atmens zum musikalischen Ausdruck wird. Angelehnt an den Vorgang des Ein- und Ausatmens bewegen sich die Tänzer*innen in der zyklischen Bewegung einer sich öffnenden und schließenden Spirale durch den Raum.

De Keersmaeker stellt in der für die Neue Nationalgalerie konzipierten Performance erstmals einen starken Dialog mit der Architektur in den Vordergrund. Die Choreografie konfrontiert die architektonische Strenge mit dem tanzenden, atmenden Körper, wodurch die Besucher*innen den berühmten Museumsbau auf eine vollkommen neue Weise erfahren.

Die Aufführungen finden vom 24. bis 27. März 2022 während den regulären Öffnungszeiten des Museums statt.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (*1960) konzipierte 1980 ihre erste Performance, nachdem sie Tanz an der Mudra School in Brüssel und an der Tisch School of the Arts in New York studiert hatte. 1983 gründete sie ihre Tanzkompanie Rosas, mit der sie ein breit gefächertes Werk geschaffen hat, das sich mit den musikalischen Stilen verschiedener Epochen auseinandersetzt. De Keersmaekers choreografische Praxis bezieht sich auf formale Prinzipien aus der Geometrie und soziale Beziehungen und bietet eine einzigartige Perspektive auf die Bewegung des Körpers in Raum und Zeit.

Over four days, the Belgian dance company Rosas will occupy the Exhibition Hall of the Neue Nationalgalerie with a performance that was specially created for the building. The piece provides museum-goers with a unique exploration of the interplay between architecture, sculpture, music and dance. The Rosas production Dark Red (a series of compositions made for different museum spaces) has most recently been performed at Kolumba in Cologne and at Fondation Beyeler in Basel.

Dark Red’s multi-day showing marks the first performance of a major choreographic work in Mies van der Rohe’s iconic museum building. The vast, transparent space of the exhibition hall serves as the stage for this dance piece by the Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, which was produced in collaboration with dancers Cassiel Gaube and Soa Ratsifandrihana, flautist Chryssi Dimitriou, and visual artist Ann Veronica Janssens.

Breath as Motif and the Dialogue with the Architecture of the Neue Nationalgalerie

The performance takes the theme of breath as its point of departure, which has long been a central choreographic principle in De Keersmaeker’s art, and is a theme that takes on a new relevance against the backdrop of the pandemic. The piece involves a live performance of L’Opera per Faluto by Salvatore Sciarrino, in which the existential need for breath and air is expressed through music. Echoing the process of inhaling and exhaling, the dancers move through the room in the cyclical motion of a pulsating spiral.

In this performance, which was developed specially for the Neue Nationalgalerie, De Keersmaeker places a focus on creating an engaged dialogue with the architecture of the space. The choreography confronts the architectural rigidity of the building with the dancing, breathing body, allowing visitors to experience the famous museum building in an entirely new way.

The performances will take place from 24–27 March 2022 during the regular opening hours of the museum.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (born 1960) created her first choreographic work in 1980, after studying dance at the Mudra School in Brussels and at Tisch School of the Arts in New York. She founded the dance company Rosas in 1983, with which she has created a wide-ranging body of work that engages with the musical styles of several historical periods. De Keersmaeker’s choreographic practice draws on formal principles from geometry and social structures, offering a unique perspective on the movement of the body through space and time.
