Variant of Concern explores our entangled relationship with the living world: the hazards of tinkering with biological evolution (transgenic species in our food, our forests) to the race today — viral variants (of concern) infecting our bodies. Performance, video, installation and living material (trees grown from seed) combine to create a kind of ethnobotanical theatre destabilizing and problematizing power relations between us and the other living things. A type of speculative fiction – seeds and seedlings supersede oil or money as the commodity of ultra-value, subverting capitalist patriarchy and the military-industrial complexes tied to techno-agriculture, forestry and medicine. The project explores the ambiguities of human nature and our human condition as irreconcilably caring and destructive.

Variant of Concern develops Lucy, the artist’s alter-ego. Subversive. Adaptive. A rabble-rouser, of sorts, challenging the status quo. At Tanzfabrik, Lucy will emerge as a kind of hybrid figure, approaching something closer to Mary Shelley’s fictional character than Florence Nightingale. Endurance gestures of repair test the limits of her body while satirizing her Promethean will — always over-striving, over-reaching until something goes awry. Delirious times demand delirious measures: Absurdity, disorder, disorientation, and repetition shape the work. Irony and disjuncture will convey the dread and psychic tension living on the cusp of a world gone mad.

Variant of Concern strives to uncover something about who we are: our hubris, our resilience and our will to survive.

Variant of Concern erforscht unsere verstrickte Beziehung mit der lebenden Welt: die Gefahren des Herumbastelns an der biologischen Evolution (transgene Arten in unserer Nahrung, unseren Wäldern) bis hin zum heutigen Wettlauf — virale Varianten (der Besorgnis) – viral variants (of concern) – die unsere Körper infizieren. Performance, Video, Installation und lebendes Material (aus Samen gezogene Bäume) verbinden sich zu einer Art ethnobotanischem Theater, das Machtverhältnisse zwischen uns und den anderen Lebewesen destabilisiert und problematisiert. Eine Art spekulative Fiktion — Samen und Setzlinge ersetzen Öl oder Geld als Ware von höchstem Wert und untergraben das kapitalistische Patriarchat und die militärisch- industriellen Komplexe, die mit Techno-Landwirtschaft, Forstwirtschaft und Medizin verbunden sind. Das Projekt erforscht die Zweideutigkeiten der menschlichen Natur und unserer menschlichen Bedingung als unversöhnlich fürsorglich und zerstörerisch.

Variant of Concern entwickelt Lucy, das Alter-Ego der Künstlerin. Subversiv. Anpassungsfähig. Eine Art Aufrührerin, die den Status quo herausfordert. In der Tanzfabrik wird Lucy als eine Art hybride Figur auftauchen, die der fiktiven Figur von Mary Shelley näher kommt als Florence Nightingale. Ausdauernde Gesten der Reparatur testen die Grenzen ihres Körpers und persiflieren gleichzeitig ihren prometheischen Willen — immer über das Ziel hinausschießend, bis etwas schief geht.

Außergewöhnliche Zeiten erfordern außergewöhnliche Maßnahmen: Absurdität, Unordnung, Desorientierung und Wiederholung prägen die Arbeit. Ironie und Brüche vermitteln das Grauen und die psychische Spannung, die an der Schwelle zu einer verrückt gewordenen Welt leben. Variant of Concern strebt danach, etwas darüber aufzudecken, wer wir sind: unsere Hybris, unsere Widerstandsfähigkeit und unseren Überlebenswillen.
