The queer performance artist Hendrik Quast, with his alter egoHendrik mit K, turns the taboo of cancer in meritocracies into the grotesque. Inspired by conversations with those affected, he questions common narratives about cancer. As a pantomime coach, Hendrik mit K establishes humorous and empowering forms of expression for experiences of illness and thus calls for a self-determined discourse.

Quast’s performance can be experienced live in the VHS Pankow as well as in the live stream. The audience follows the dramaturgy of a workshop session. Through the art of pantomime, new ways of speaking are found that mobilize the boundary between illness and health.

“Dancer with Cancer” is a production by Hendrik Quast in co-production with Akademie Schloss Solitude, Theater Rampe, Musik der Jahrhunderte, Freie Tanz- und Theaterszene Stuttgart, PZ Produktionszentrum Tanz, VHS Stuttgart.

It was presented as part of “The Irritated City. Festival of the Arts”, Stuttgart. Funded by Kulturamt der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart within the framework of TANZPAKT Stuttgart, Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, Senatskanzlei für Kultur und Europa, Berlin.

Der queere Performancekünstler Hendrik Quast wendet mit seinem Alter Ego Hendrik mit K die Tabuisierung von Krebskrankheit in Leistungsgesellschaften ins Groteske. Inspiriert von Gesprächen mit Betroffenen hinterfragt er gängige Narrative von Krebskrankheit. Hendrik mit K etabliert als Pantomime-Coach humorvolle und empowernde Ausdrucksformen für Krankheitserfahrungen und fordert so einen selbstbestimmten Diskurs ein.

Quasts Performance kann sowohl live in der VHS Pankow als auch im Livestream miterlebt werden. Das Publikum folgt der Dramaturgie einer Workshopsession. Dabei werden durch die Kunst der Pantomime neue Sprechweisen gefunden, die die Grenze von Krankheit und Gesundheit mobilisieren.
