Jan Klata (1973) - Studied direction at the Warsaw Academy, and later at the state theatre school in Krakow. He acted as assistant to giants of direction such as Jerzy Grzegorzewski and Krystian Lupa. His first production, Gogo's "The Government Inspector", was celebrated as the most important debut of the Polish theatre scene. Since then Jan Klata has worked in leading Polish theatres, in Warsaw, Krakow and Wroclaw. His productions have been seen at various festivals abroad, including HAU in Berlin, the Festival d'Automne in Paris, the international festival in Buenos Aires and repeatedly also at the Theatre festival. In 2006 Jan Klata directed his fist production in a German-language theatre in Graz, and three years later in the Düsseldof Schauspielhaus. His productions have won a number of significant Polish theatre awards. In January 2013 he took over the artistic direction of the Stary Theatr. in Krakow. "Hamlet" is Klata's third production for the Schauspielhaus Bochum; it was preceded by productions of Schiller's "The Robbers" and Franz Kafka's "America". The spirit of Hamlet's father in the Bochum production is played by the actor who had the role of Hamlet in Klata's famous Polish production of the play, shown in 2004 in the Gdansk dockyards.
