Péter Gothár (born 28 August 1947) - is a Hungarian film director and screenwriter. He worked first in television, going on to direct at the Csiky Gergely Theatre in Kaposvár where his productions included The Broken Jug, The Goverment and Mother Courage. Since 1989 he has directed at the József Katona Theatre. He frequently also designs the sets for his productions. Gothár has won international regocnation as a film director. Beginning with his first film, A Priceless Day in 1979, his work has nearly all won awards for the best Hungerian film of the year. His film debut also won the Golden Lion at Venice.

He has directed 23 films since 1974. His film The Outpost was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.
