Hetain Patel is an interdisciplinary artist from a visual arts background. His award winning work spans photography, video and live performance. Since 2004, he has presented works worldwide in galleries, film festivals and more recently in theatres. His practice interrogates various sensory forms of language, communication and cultural identity. Hetain is represented in India by gallery Chatterjee & Lal (Mumbai) where he recently had a solo exhibition (January 2012). Later this year, in London, he has been invited to be artist in residence at Southbank Centre (April 2012), commissioned by Tate to make new work for Tate Modern Oil Tanks (August 2012), and premiere a live performance at Royal Opera House (November 2012). Before this, in Nottingham, he has a solo exhibition of video and photography works opening at New Art Exchange (April 2012), which have been recently commissioned by the gallery. In 2010 Hetain created and toured nationally, his first piece for the theatre, TEN, produced by Dance4, Nottingham. This piece, which also completed a run at 2011’s Sydney Festival, Australia, was selected for British Council’s Edinburgh Showcase 2011, and British Dance Edition, London 2012. It will tour internationally in 2013. Hetain has undertaken three substantial residences over the past five years, including a summer at 501 Arts Space in Chongqing, China (2009), where he collaborated with visual artists, choreographers and musicians. In addition to his practice Hetain is a visiting lecturer at Nottingham Trent University in Fine Art. He serves as a board member at Déda, Derby’s dance centre and as a member of Regional Council for Arts Council England, East Midlands.
