From vast boombox symphonies to chamber music and songs cycles, Phil Kline's work has been hailed for its originality and beauty. The 2006 season features a range of premieres: CHINOOK, a new outdoor boombox piece presented at the Winter Olympics in Turin; LOCUS SOLUS, a music-theater work with Theo Bleckmann, Todd Reynolds and the Talujon Percussion Ensemble; and a full-length mass, JOHN THE REVELATOR, for the early music vocal group Lionheart. The 2007 season will see world premieres including SITE, a collaboration with choreographer Wally Cardona at Dance Theater Workshop, featuring music performed by 57 members of the Capitol High School Band of Helena, Montana; WORLD ON A STRING, a large sound installation combined with performances, opening the 2007 season of the Krannert Center in Illinois; and AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAZE, a 5.01 surround-sound DVD on the Starkland record label. Kline's compositions have been performed in rock clubs, art galleries, and major concert halls throughout the world. His signature boombox composition, UNSILENT NIGHT, has become a cult holiday tradition, played annually in the streets of dozens of cities around the world. Among his recent works are THE BLUE ROOM AND OTHER STORIES, written for the string quartet Ethel, and the widely acclaimed song cycle ZIPPO SONGS, written for baritone Theo Bleckmann. Recordings of both works are available on the Cantaloupe Music label.
