This catalogue accompanies ONCE OVER TIME – a retrospective celebrating the legacy and artistic vision of the exceptional artist Cristina Caprioli. Over the last four decades Caprioli has become known as a pioneer of post-modern dance in the Nordic countries. With her highly influential and innovative choreographic practice, she continues to explore and interrogate dance as a way of thinking. ONCE OVER TIME – a retrospective is the fourth in a series that started in 2015, when Tanz im August first invited cutting-edge British artist and choreographer Rosemary Butcher to present her archive project along with multiple works from her oeuvre. The series continued in 2017 with the Switzerland-based Spanish choreographer and experimental feminist artist La Ribot and in 2019 with the American pioneer of postmodern dance Deborah Hay. Along with each retrospective Tanz im August publishes a catalogue, which just like the programme is developed in close collab-

oration with the artist. Working alongside choreographer Caprioli demanded us to keep up

with her critical, rigorous and fast-moving thinking. The curatorial process was aided by the extensive research that Caprioli launched with her collaborators and her team from ccap. She was in the midst of reworking and testing out numerous old works and also choreographing new ones as we settled on the presentation of 22 works from 2002 to 2022.

These works are divided into four clusters and presented at HAU Hebbel am Ufer and two other venues in Berlin: Leafing at KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art, Loops at HAU2, Ashes at Radialsystem and Haze at HAU3. Each cluster offers a different take on Caprioli’s artistic vision and practice; together they display an array of performances, one concert, installations, films and art objects. Along with her collaborators and performers, Caprioli invites us to leaf through her rich oeuvre and provides us with ‘a lighthearted, quick-footed, sharp-witted overview of a seriously thick amount of dancing’ as she puts it herself.
