DON JUAN

Beschreibung

Awarded with the first price at the "1er Concurso de Nueva Ópera" (2016) by the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón and the Centro de Experimentación del Teatro Colón, "Don Juan" is a new opera based on the homonymous piece by one of the fundamental Argentinean dramaturgs of the 20th century, Leopoldo Marechal, whose writings engrave a new colour as never seen before in the most pagan of Christian myths.

The text presents us with an adult Don Juan who returns to his own town seeking to appease his urges, which now haunt him, and yearning for a repose he has never experienced; this is a Don Juan who, for the first time, heeds the consequences of his actions and bares a hue as unprecedented as Argentinean: this is a melancholic Don Juan.

Loaded with native symbolism of the Pampean river banks, the work mixes the European-Christian heritage with the myths of the River Plate basin, whose sensorial exuberance inspired us to create a 360° stage which immerses the audience in the scene -and the mud- and surrounds them with voices that summon them to become a part of the revolted town, which finally drowns at the arrival of his lost son.

A groundbreaking scenic and musical conception for one of the masterpieces of South-american literature, which invites us to revisit one of the fundamental myths of the universal lyrical repertoire, thus confronting us with the maturity of this man, who finally understands the meaning of his existence in the most tragic of ways...
