Viaje a Comala (Journey to Comala)

Autorenschaft
Beschreibung

Comala is a place where the voices of those who lived under the violent regime of the landlord Pedro Páramo are still sounding. «Journey to Comala» is a dialogue with the dead, a «theatre or voices» in which the separation between stage and audience is suspended in favor of a surrounding multisensory polyphonic space.
«Journey to Comala» is based on «Pedro Páramo», the emblematic novel by Juan Rulfo (1955). It is considered today a classical text of modern Latin American literature, an audaciously structured precursor of magic realism. The continuous changing of perspectives, the complex fabric of temporal and narrative layers, the language both rough and poetic, reflecting Mexican rural culture and landscape, make it a singular work in which the reader enters a labyrinth of voices and echoes. The novel describes a rigid society at the time of the Mexican Revolution, trapped in a system of dependency and complicity in which superstition and false illusions prevent any renewal. Only a woman, Susana San Juan, attempts to oppose this system of violence. Is it possible to achieve freedom without overcoming self-delusion?
The musical conception of «Journey to Comala» is closely related to the original text, its ability to reveal a culture, its linguistic multiplicity and its poetic power. All elements in the work, space, voice, music, electronic sound, light, video projection and scenic realization act together to introduce the audience into the mythic world that is Comala.
