Sound Square (en)

The Theater o.N.'s engagement with the genre of music theatre began in 2016 in the form of a co-production with the Deutsche Oper Berlin ("Kleines Stück Himmel" (Little Piece of Heaven, premiere: 3/19/2016). Subsequently we decided together with the opera to continue the cooperation and to make "music theatre for the very young" a focal point of the FRATZ Symposium 2017. In this context, we set up two research laboratories, each of which, working in mixed teams of artists of the field of New Music and performers of Theater o.N., investigated how to compose for very young children and how music relates to other aesthetic means, especially the visual and narrative.
As a further development of the laboratories "Klangquadrat" was created. The team of composers/instrumentalists/performers set itself the task of making music visible without narratively illustrating it. The artists decided on a concrete experimental arrangement and invented a sound square of 3x3 tones on the C-DUR scale. Thus they set themselves musically and scenically a strict framework within which they experimented. All compositions use this musical material, they explore the possibilities and take it to a deeper level. Sometimes they consciously and playfully break the "rules". If one follows the compositions on the sound square, a choreography of the music-making bodies in space is created. This way making music itself becomes a theatrical act. Sound Square
