Dokumentarfilm zum Holocaust, Schweden 1989. Peter Cohen hat in seinem Dokumentarfilm mit Hilfe von bisher unbekanntem Bildmaterial die oft schon augewerteten, berühmten Filmdokumente aus der NS-Zeit neu gedeutet. Es gelingt ihm auf eine fast bestürzend logische Weise, die selbstmörderische Vernichtungs-Ideologie und die ungeheuerlichen Verbrechen des Nazi-Regimes aus dem Schönheitsbedürfnis seiner geistigen Führer, aus der militanten Kleinbürger-Ästhetik, aus dem pathologischen Reinheitswahn und dem unterdrückten Kunstwollen abzuleiten. Politik als eine Form von angewandter Kunst, der Untergang als die höchste Form des Erhabenen, als heroische Herausforderung. Cohen kann dabei auf all die sattsam bekannten Schockeffekte, mit denen andere Filmautoren sich der Emotionen ihres Publikums versichern, verzichten. Er referiert die historischen Ereignisse und die politischen Dokumente auf betont sachliche Weise und konfrontiert und kommentiert das Ungebreifliche mit der ästethischen Simplizität, der erschreckend geistigen Dürftigkeit der pompösen künstlerischen Anstrengungen der Zeit. Aided by previously unknown footage in this documentary film Peter Cohen has rendered a new interpretation of the often analyzed, famous filmic documents of the Nazi period. In an almost alarmingly logical way, he is able to show the suicidal ideology of extermination and the atrocious crimes of the Nazi regime are an off-shoot of its spiritual leader’s desire for beauty, of the militant bourgeois aesthetic sensibility, of the pathological delusion of purity and the suppressed artistic need. Politics as a form of applied art, euthanasia and the extermination of the Jews as the plan for the regaining of beauty, war as the dramatic and moving act of puification and decline as the highest form of superiority, as heroic challenge. In the process, Cohen reports the historical events and the political documents in a markedly objective manner and confronts and comments on the inconceivable with the aesthetic simplicity, the dreadful spiritual wretchedness, of the pompous artistic efforts of the time.(Quelle: cine-holocaust.de).
