Faces, hands, and voices: as part of a long weekend of dance, Radialsystem presents the German premiere of the solo performance “Personne With Voice”, by Isabelle Schad and Laurent Goldring. Their new choreography originates with the concept of “Personne”: “Personne” is the French word for “person” and “cognisance”. It can also refer to absence, as in the expression “il n’y a personne” – “there is no one”. In Roman antiquity, “persona” referred to masks – theatre masks that represent a character or a ritual mask that specify the dancers’ social positions. A gradual shift moves the meaning through all these layers of identity, whether it be understood as personality, character, or as a subject without individual features.

“Personne With Voice” arose out of a creative process that is characteristic of their collaboration: the interweaving of the dialogue between the two artists with the projects that they work on individually.

Dancer and choreographer Isabelle Schad first studied ballet at the John Cranko School in Stuttgart. After working in various classical ensembles for six years, she moved on to contemporary companies, including Ultima Vez, led by Wim Vandekeybus, in Brussels. From 1999 onwards she initiated her own projects. Her work focuses on the body and its materiality, processuality and knowability, as well as the relationship between the unity of body–mind–soul, choreography and (re)presentation, and the issues of community-building and political engagement. Her works have been performed at international festivals as well as in museums and visual art contexts. In 2019 Isabelle Schad was awarded the Deutscher Tanzpreis for her outstanding artistic contribution to contemporary dance. Her work “Harvest” (2021), a collaboration with Theater o.N. and Offensive Tanz für junges Publikum, was nominated for the Ikarus Prize 2022.

The philosopher and visual artist Laurent Goldring has been working on themes of representation and, in particular, of the body since 1995. Goldring’s fundamental idea is that images are not representations but organs. He has had numerous exhibitions at a.o. Centre Pompidou (Paris), Foundation Gulbenkian (Paris), Fondation Cartier (Paris) and worked internationally with various choreographers including Saskia Hölbling, Sandrine Buring, Isabelle Schad, Louise Lecavallier, Benoît Lachambre, Germana Civera, Bernhard Lang, Donata d’Urso, JM Rabeux, Xavier Le Roy.

Gesichter, Hände und Stimmen: Im Rahmen eines langen Tanzwochenendes zeigt das Radialsystem als Deutschlandpremiere die Solo-Performance „Personne With Voice“ von Isabelle Schad und Laurent Goldring. Ihre neue Choreografie geht vom Konzept „Personne“ aus: „Personne“ bedeutet auf Französisch ‚Person‘ und ‚Bewusstsein‘. Es kann sich auch auf Abwesenheit beziehen, wie in dem Ausdruck „il n’y a personne“ – „es ist niemand ist da“. In der römischen Antike bezog sich „persona“ auf die Maske: Theatermaske, die eine Figur darstellt, oder eine rituelle Maske, die den Platz der Tänzer*innen in der sozialen Organisation festlegt. Eine allmähliche Verschiebung bewegt die Bedeutung durch all diese Identitätsschichten, egal ob sie als Persönlichkeit, Bühnenfigur oder als Subjekt ohne individuelle Merkmale verstanden werden.

„Personne With Voice“ entstand auf der Basis eines für ihre Zusammenarbeit charakteristischen kreativen Prozesses, bei dem der Dialog der beiden Künstler*innen mit den Projekten, an denen sie einzeln arbeiten, verflochten ist.

Die Tänzerin und Choreografin Isabelle Schad studierte Klassischen Tanz in Stuttgart und arbeitete mit zahlreichen Choreograf*innen, bevor sie 1999 begann, ihre eigenen Arbeiten zu entwickeln. Ihre Recherche konzentriert sich auf die Beziehungen zwischen Selbst, Wahrnehmung und Erfahrung, Choreografie und (Re)Präsentation. Sie betrachtet künstlerische Praxis als Ort für Lernprozesse, Gemeinschaft und politische Teilhabe. Ihre Projekte werden auf Festivals, in Museen oder theatralen Räumen international gezeigt. Sie unterrichtet weltweit, ist Shiatsu, Reiki und Aikido Praktizierende und Ko-Organisatorin des Arbeitsortes Tanzhalle Wiesenburg in Berlin. Im Rahmen des Deutschen Tanzpreises 2019 erhielt Schad eine Ehrung für herausragende künstlerische Entwicklungen im zeitgenössischen Tanz. Ihr Werk „Harvest“ (2021), eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Theater o.N. /Offensive Tanz für junges Publikum, wurde für den Ikarus Preis 2022 nominiert.

Goldring geht von der Idee aus, dass Bilder keine Darstellungen, sondern Organe sind. Zahlreiche Ausstellungen, u.a. im Centre Pompidou, Fondation Cartier, Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Foundation Gulbenkian (Lisbonne), Moma PS1 (New York), zeigten seine Werke. Zudem arbeitet er international mit verschieden Choreograf*innen zusammen, unter ihnen Saskia Hölbling, Sandrine Buring, Louise Lecavallier, Benoît Lachambre, Germana Civera, Bernhard Lang, Donata d’Urso, JM Rabeux, Xavier Le Roy, Mickaël Phelippeau, Symo Reyn, Abed Azrié und Isabelle Schad.
