Elizabeth LeCompte is the director and co-founder of The Wooster Group, an experimental theatre company known for deconstructions of classical texts (Hamlet, The Emperor Jones) and integration of multimedia. Since 1975, she has directed all of the Group’s works including RUMSTICK ROAD (1977), L.S.D. (…JUST THE HIGH POINTS…) (1984), BRACE UP! (1991), HOUSE/LIGHTS (1999), TO YOU, THE BIRDIE! (Phèdre) (2002), WHO’S YOUR DADA?! (2006), the installation THERE IS STILL TIME…BROTHER (2007), and the opera LA DIDONE (2008). Her awards and honors include an NEA Distinguished Artists Fellowship for Lifetime Achievement in American Theater, the MacArthur Fellowship, the Skowhegan Medal for Performance, the Chevalier des Artes et Lettres from the French Cultural Ministry, a Guggenheim fellowship, a United States Artists Fellowship, an Anonymous Was A Woman Award, and honorary doctorates from the New School and California Institute for the Arts.
