Attaway, Larry

Information

Larry Attaway is a composer and dance educator currently the Director of the Jordan College Academy of Dance at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. He came to Butler in 1997 after a 25 year association with the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, serving there as a faculty member (1972-97), Associate Dean of the School of Dance (1976-97), President of the Academic Senate and Faculty Trustee. Mr. Attaway was Composer in Residence and Associate Director for Bella Lewitzky and the Lewitzky Dance Company from 1973 to 1997. He and Ms. Lewitzky collaborated on over 16 works for the Lewitzky Dance Company. Mr. Attaway also stages and choreographs dance works, including a 1980 reconstruction of the Russian avant-garde opera "Victory Over the Sun", a 1999 dance work called "Canon" for the Jordan Dance Ensemble, and a new staging of "The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore" done in collaboration with Erik Stark and the Butler Madrigal Singers. Mr. Attaway is a founding member of the International Guild of Musicians for Dance, and in 1999 the Guild President and the editor of the Journal. He is a member of ASCAP, the National Association of Schools for Dance, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, a National Board Member of Sigma Rho Delta and has served the Indiana Council of the Arts as an Advisory Panelist.
